Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How soon should I book a mover?
A: We suggest that you schedule a tentative move date 6-8 weeks before moving. Be aware of the peak summer season that can make scheduling more difficult.

Q: How do I know if my moving company is licensed?
A: All of homesmoving.com referrals are fully licensed and bonded movers. We will not let unqualified companies contact you. The background checks have already been done! All you have to do is just compare services and rates.

Q: How soon should I start packing?
A: As soon as possible! Packing is a long tedious process (assuming you don’t want to just throw everything into a box and tape it up). As mentioned in our moving tips, it is highly recommended that you list all the items in each box. By spending more time at the beginning organizing and packing with clear labels, you’ll spend much less time unpacking and searching for items once in your new home. Pace yourself, try packing up one room each week.

Follow our moving timeline:

6-8 weeks before moving - Decide what stays and what goes! You don’t need to take everything with you, and you’ll no doubt want to buy a lot of new things for your new home. Start dropping off items at your local donation point or plan a garage sale.

4-6 weeks before moving - Gather packing supplies and start loading up items from the back of the closet, all the things you know you won't need for the next month.

2 weeks before moving - By now, you should have just about everything except for your daily use items packed. At this point you’re probably swamped with phone calls and appointments. Don’t burden yourself with clutter too.

Q: How much do I tip my movers?
A: If you are happy with their service, it’s customary to tip $20-50 per mover for a fairly difficult load (furniture, stairs, heavy boxes, long hours). For smaller moves that were completed within 4 hours and that consisted of mainly standard boxes and lighter items, it is fine to give $10 to each mover. For a team, you can leave the tip with the team leader or you may wish to hand each mover their individual tip based on how hard you believed they worked. A tip of $5 is considered insulting and would be given to someone who slacked off or handled your items poorly.

It is always nice to provide refreshments for your workers and for longer shifts, quick lunches/dinners like sandwiches or pizza are a nice gesture.
